What Happens During Your Checkup?
Your teeth will be carefully cleaned and polished by the dentist, who will remove calcified build-up above and just along the gumlines. A deep cleaning may be recommended if gum disease is evident.
To check for decay or infections that aren’t obvious during your visit, dental X-rays may be obtained as needed (approximately once a year).
Our dentist will look for indicators of oral cancer so that lesions can be biopsied and treated more quickly and effectively. As needed, additional preventative therapy such as fluoride or sealants will be suggested.
Your health appointment should take about 45 minutes of your time.
Maintaining a Healthy Smile Between Visits
- Even if you have the best dental treatment, you must practise good oral hygiene at home. Excess tartar should be prevented from forming, which can lead to gum disease or tooth loss.
- Brush your teeth twice a day. Brush along the gumlines with a soft toothbrush, concentrating on only a few teeth at a time. Brush for at least two minutes each time you brush.
- Floss your teeth at least once a day. To clean between the teeth where a toothbrush cannot reach, use regular floss, a curved floss pick, or a water flosser. Cavities and gum disease are very common in these locations.
- Clean your tongue to keep your breath fresh. To remove food debris that accumulates after meals, brush your tongue from back to front.
- Most severe dental problems are avoidable; visit us every six months to maintain your smile healthy for life.
